French Impressionist Painter, 1841-1919 French painter, printmaker and sculptor. He was one of the founders and leading exponents of IMPRESSIONISM from the late 1860s, producing some of the movement's most famous images of carefree leisure. He broke with his Impressionist colleagues to exhibit at the Salon from 1878, and from c. 1884 he adopted a more linear style indebted to the Old Masters. Ivan Agueli (ursprungligen John Gustaf Agelii tog sig senare i livet namnet Abd Al-Hadi Aqhili), född 24 maj 1869 i Sala, Västmanlands län, död i en tågolycka den 1 oktober 1917 i Barcelona, Katalonien, Spanien, var en svensk målare, religionsfilosof och orientalist. Agueli blev med sitt nydanande måleri en av den svenska konstens förgrundsgestalter. Enbart genom noggrant avvägda färgtoner framkallade han en känsla av avstånd och ljus i sina målningar, som trots det intima formatet äger en stor monumentalitet. Agueli hade en tämligen välbärgad uppväxt. Hans far, stallmästaren och veterinären Johan Gabriel Agelii (f.1821 i Farstorp, Kristianstads län - d. 22 december 1896)² var dock en sträng man vars relation till sonen skulle bli dålig hela livet. Modern Anna Stina Nyberg (f.1838 i Vika, Kopparbergs län) var en varm människa som kompenserade det kärlekslösa förhållandet till fadern. Efter flera misslyckade försök till studier under åren 1879-1886 i Sala, Västerås, Falun och Stockholm, sändes Agueli till Visby av fadern 1886. Han blev där uppmärksammad för sin konstnärlighet, och började umgås med Richard Bergh och Karl Nordström.
William Strutt
English Painter, ca.1825-1915 was an English artist. Strutt was born in Teignmouth, Devon, England, and came from a family of artists, his grandfather, Joseph Strutt, was a well-known author and artist, his father, William Thomas Strutt, was a good miniature painter. William Strutt enjoyed a student life in Paris, France, and England, studying figurative and history painting. In response to a near-breakdown and problems with his eyes, Strutt decided to visit Australia, arriving 5 July 1850 on the Culloden, where he then married. In Melbourne, Strutt found employment as an illustrator on the short-lived Illustrated Australian Magazine, published by Thomas Ham, as there was little demand for the figurative and history paintings for which he was trained. Some of his designs did, however, lead to commissions, including a design for a new postage stamp, and an Anti-Transportation League card. Despite the lack of interest for major history paintings in Melbourne, Strutt continued to sketch suitable subjects, including the "Black Thursday" bushfires, which swept over the colony on 6 February 1851. It was from these sketches that Strutt composed one of his most notable paintings some 10 years later, Black Thursday, February 6th. 1851, 1864, which depicted animals and men fleeing from the fire. In February 1852, Strutt joined the growing tide of men travelling to the gold-fields surrounding Ballarat, Victoria. Despite working in the gold fields for eighteen months he found little success. He returned to Melbourne in mid-1853 and became actively involved in the city's cultural scene, undertaking a number of portrait commissions and joining the Victorian Society of Fine Arts as a founding member. Italian Baroque Era Printmaker, 1610-1664,was an Italian printmaker known for etchings of many subjects, including military ones. He was born at Florence, and apprenticed initially to a goldsmith, but became an engraver working under Orazio Vanni and then Cesare Dandini. He studied etching under Remigio Cantagallina, who had also been the instructor of Jacques Callot, who had lived in Florence 1612-1621, and whose prints imparted a strong influence to printmakers. The patronage of Don Lorenzo de Medici enabled della Bella to study for three years in Rome. In Rome, he created a then admired print of the cavalcade celebrating the entry of the Polish ambassador into Rome in 1633. He also created a number of prints of views of Rome. In 1642 he went to Paris, introduced by the Tuscan ambassador, Alessandro del Nero, and where he resided for seven years. Cardinal Richelieu engaged him to go to Arras and make drawings of the siege and taking of that town by the royal army. After residing a considerable time at Paris he returned to Florence, where he obtained a pension from the grand duke, whose son, Cosimo de Medici, he instructed in drawing. His productions were very numerous, amounting to over 1000 separate pieces. He is known to have illustrated some discoveries for Galileo.
